A comedy film that has gotten positive reviews from both audiences and critics is called The Other Guys. An action-comedy starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Samuel L. Jackson, the movie has been a hit in movie theaters, dvd rentals, and dvd sales. The Other Guys trailer is a popular download as well.
The story is a creative one. When officers Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) pursue a group of thugs in a car, there is a short firefight that results in the hood of Highsmith’s car getting blown into the windshield. The two end up crashing into the side of a double decker bus. Danson drives in after the criminals and miraculously slingshots the car out the other side of the bus. Highsmith crashes into Trump Tower, firing the whole way, somehow surviving the wreckage. The criminals at first manage to escape, but police backup quickly arrives and brings them into custody.
Officer Gamble (Will Ferrell) is a forensic accountant who is much more interested in mundane paperwork than hitting the streets, but idolizes Danson and Highsmith. Disgraced Police Officer Hoitz (played by Mark Wahlberg) has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since he shot Derek Jeter during the World Series. Hoitz and Allen receive little respect from other police officers. They trick Allen into shooting his gun in the office, leaving him with a wooden practice gun as punishment. Terry Hoitz detests Allen’s taste in music, his singing while driving and his having a beautiful wife played by (Eva Mendes). During a pursuit of a group of some professional bank robbers, Danson and Highsmith die when they jump off a 20-story building onto the sidewalk, inexplicably agreeing to aim for bushes that aren’t there. The two were hailed as heros by the police force despite their stupid mistake.
When the chance arises for Terry and Allen (the “other guys”) to rise to the occasion, things go seriously awry. Allen starts looking into a simple scaffolding permit violation and winds up uncovering a much larger plot by billionaire David Ershon to hide his company’s losses. As things get worse, Allen and Terry are forced to split up. Allen still tries to solve the crime on his own, even though Terry thinks it is a dead end. Finally, he finds believable evidence and earns his gun back. Allen finally convinces Terry to rejoin him. They stop the criminals who are attempting to scam the money. Allen initially believes the $32 billion Ershon is trying to come up with will come from the New York Lottery Office, but he finds out that it will really come from the New York Police Department pension fund. Both officers get shot when police backup finally arrives on the scene, rescuing the two and neatly tying up loose ends with Ershon and Wesley. Allen and Terry believe that the true heroes are the ones who make the world a better place to live, not the people who appear on TV. Ershon’s arrest precipitates a crash on Wall Street and a subsequent federal bailout. The movie ends with an artistic shot of a peacock doing a fly-by in reference to Terry’s remark “I am a peacock, you gotta let me fly.”
