Scarlett Johansson had to go through a rigorous grooming routine for her role in Don Jon

Scarlett Johansson has revealed that keeping up appearances was the most challenging aspect of her Don Jon role.

The Bafta-winning actress, who stars in Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s comedy alongside Julianne Moore, admitted staying as preened as Barbara Sugarman wasn’t easy, as the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“It takes a lot of maintenance to look that good, you know,” she said.

“A lot of self-tanner, get the nails filled (with acrylic), got to make sure the (curly) girl’s blown out. It’s a lot of time in the hair and make-up department. The biggest challenge was trying to type on my phone with those acrylic nails, because it was excruciating. I couldn’t do anything when I had them on, and then when they were off, I still couldn’t do anything. It was the worst.”

The 28-year-old, who wore a black YSL dress, added: “It was great to put on that look every day, it was like, ‘It’s Barbara!’ I come in in sweatpants looking like somebody punched me in the face and then, I magically appear out of the hair and make-up trailer and look like Barbara Sugarman.”

Don Jon marks the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who previously directed short films. The 32-year-old also stars as a modern-day Don Juan, who decides to give up his pornography addiction and find a more fulfilling sex life.

“I’ve heard a lot of people say, ‘Why can’t my life be like that movie you were in?’ or ‘Why can’t I find somebody like you in that movie?’ That’s really startling,” he said.

“That’s why I thought a story about a man who watches too much pornography and a woman who watches too many romantic Hollywood movies would equate the two. Sometimes they give equally unrealistic expectations,” added the Looper star.
