Melanie Griffith stars in The Dark Tourist

Melanie Griffith has said she managed to find fun in her new movie The Dark Tourist, despite the gritty subject matter.

The film, which also stars Southland actor Michael Cudlitz, is a dark psychological thriller about a man obsessed with visiting the sites of murders committed by serial killers.

Dressed in a floor length black gown at the Hollywood premiere of the movie, Working Girl star Melanie said: “There really are people that go around and follow serial killers where they did their stuff, it’s the real deal.”

The 56-year-old, who is married to actor Antonio Banderas, said she managed to find fun on the serious film set.

“It was intense but it was great because everybody was really into it and loved what they were doing and it was fun.

“Even though a story is really wicked and dark it’s more fun when everybody is loving what they are doing.”

Melanie was joined on the red carpet by co-star Michael, who said that grief tourism is more common than people acknowledge.

“Every time you take a picture of a place or a building where something happened, that’s grief tourism. Every time you visit where 9/11 happened, Pearl Harbour, Graceland, where things happened, that’s it.”

He added: “As humans everyone has darkness in them and that is what makes life exciting. How do you tap into that and how do you keep it at bay?”
