Asian Americans at BU speak up against racism, implore community to listen

With the March 16 shooting in Atlanta that killed six Asian women and the more recent assault against a 65-year-old Asian American woman in New York City Monday, the United States is witnessing physical and verbal attacks against the Asian community throughout its borders.

And at Boston University, Asian students are not immune to such hatred, discrimination and threats to their safety.

Spencer Yeh, a sophomore in the Questrom School of Business, is an Asian American from New York. Yeh said having grown up on Long Island, a predominantly white area, he hadn’t experienced “plain racism” until recently.

By Fenway Park, just over a week ago, Yeh said he was walking back from Northeastern University around 8:30 p.m. when a maskless middle-aged white male approached him, called Yeh a racial slur and told him to “go die.”

“That rattled me,” he said.

Yeh said the incident was especially jarring because of the recent attacks against Asian women — after the incident, his mind jumped to what would have happened if his female relatives were in his shoes.

“If I’m being called this, if I was with my grandma, something worse could have happened, she could have gotten beaten,” he said. “If that was my sister, she could have gotten beaten. These are just getting pretty scary.”

Yeh added he thinks most of the violence against Asian individuals in the United States should be considered hate crimes, despite national debate over whether recent incidents, such as the Atlanta shooting, meet the definition.

“Most of them are hate crimes because these grandmas are called racial slurs,” Yeh said. “They’re beaten specifically because they’re old. There’s a pattern, it’s systematic, so that’s why it is a hate crime.”

Nearly 3,800 incidents of anti-Asian hate incidents have been self-reported to Stop AAPI Hate Reporting Center — an organization that collects data on hate incidents against Asian American and Pacific Islander individuals in the United States — in the last year alone, a new report stated. More than 500 of them took place in 2021, as of Feb. 28.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans rose by 149% in 2020, even as overall hate crimes declined by 7%, according to a study conducted by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism.

Racism against the Asian community in general isn’t something new to Terriers.

Ariel Cheng Kohane, a College of Communication student in the Class of 2022, is half Chinese and half Ashkenazi Jewish. Growing up, Kohane said she has been stereotyped for her identity.

She said when the “Harry Potter” book series became popular, classmates at recess would bring the story to life. When planning the game, other kids decided Kohane would play Cho Chang — one of the few visible Asian characters in the books — and she was told to “pull your eyes back.”

“I remember being so angry that I shouted at her for making fun of Chinese people,” Kohane said. “It still definitely has left a mark on what I remember of that person.”

Kohane also recalled a non-Asian sixth-grade student saying they would only speak to Chinese individuals if “they were serving him fried rice,” a comment that has stayed with her, as did a classmate’s reaction: laughter.

Kaye Chin, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences and vice president of external affairs for BU’s Asian Student Union, said she is currently seeing racism in San Francisco. The city has distinct financial disparities she’s observed in different neighborhoods, and Chin said she has seen racism directed toward her mother and grandmother because of her mother’s heavy accent.

“Systemic racism has been very visible in my life,” she said. “I’ve had a teacher tell me, ‘oh, you should know this, you have a head start because you’re Chinese and you’re Asian’ … small things like that.”

Out of frustration, Chin recently made an Instagram post last week about “ways to support the Asian community” at BU. She said she wrote the message to process the recent hate crimes and provide BU students with action steps and resources.

“I think like every Asian American woman, feeling like this is a time for grieving,” Chin said. “What frustrates me the most I’ve been thinking about is there isn’t a super strong leadership in the Asian community, it’s hard to find someone to look to.”

Especially because ASU is “swamped,” Chin said her post can serve as a guide for students, particularly those who are non-Asian.

“My friends around me are like, ‘yeah, my white friends are asking me what I should do and what’s going on’ and it’s like, they can Google things themselves,” she said. “That’s why I put together the guide.”

The post advertised a town hall, listed demands for the University and implored the community to educate themselves instead of expecting other Asian students to teach them. The post currently has more than 950 likes.

“People want to take action, it’s hard to know where to go and what organizations to donate to,” Chin said. “I wanted to direct people to the right resources as well.”

In order to properly address hate crimes against the Asian community now and in the future, Chin said it’s important to educate people about Asian Americans’ experience in this country.

“Asian American history is American history, and it’s disappointing about how uneducated people are about how prevalent racism has been for the Asian community and what that looks like,” she said. “How could you not call it a hate crime?”

Yeh said it’s important to start teaching students about biases and diversity at a young age. He added it’s important for the Asian community to speak out about their experience for “survival.” After experiencing racial discrimination, he said he is working to tell his story, and encourages those who feel comfortable to do the same.

“I want to make sure that that data is collected, that my voice is heard,” he said. “It’s important to listen and also spread the other people’s story to make sure that everybody in the Asian community stays safe and stays vigilant against this racism.”

Scholastic To Publish Kaleidoscope, A New Novel By #1 New York Times Bestselling Author And Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick On September 21, 2021

Ellie Berger, President of Scholastic’s Trade Division, said: “Brian Selznick is a boldly innovative storyteller and artist. His latest masterpiece, Kaleidoscope, is both mysterious and moving, haunting and heartwarming—a searing and hopeful tale that will be treasured by readers.”

“Every Brian Selznick book not only tells you a great story, but shows you a compelling new way that a great story can be told. Kaleidoscope beats with a human heart and breathes the oxygen of life itself. And if you want to know what I mean by that, you’ll have to lose yourself in its pages and give yourself to the words and images it offers,” said David Levithan, VP, Publisher, and Editorial Director for Scholastic.

Brian Selznick said, “I’ve been working on Kaleidoscope for the last five years, but the book transformed completely since the pandemic began into something unlike anything else I’ve written or illustrated. Readers of my other books will find familiar elements in it: a trip to the moon, shipwrecks, fires, angels and keys. But, like looking through a kaleidoscope, all these elements have shifted and rearranged into something new. I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Cornell Jewish Community Celebrates Passover Through Socially Distanced Seders

Cornell’s Jewish community has come together to celebrate Passover, holding Seders in students’ homes, at Base Ithaca and in dining halls to gather for the spring holiday.

Cornell Hillel assembled Seder care packages so students could have their own small gatherings with their pods at home to celebrate the Passover, which commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery. Hillel also partnered with Cornell Dining to hold Seders at 104 West! and Trillium.

Cornell Dining helped facilitate the Seders by clearing the dining hall of leavened bread. Because Hillel staff is unable to be on campus due to the pandemic, Hillel student leaders led the dining hall Seders.

HBO Max reportedly working on early development for possible Harry Potter live-action series

Early development efforts are underway at HBO Max for a Harry Potter live-action series, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The publication cited sources who said executives have had multiple conversations with possible writers to explore ideas.

They have considered broad ideas as part of early exploratory meetings.

They don’t yet have a writer or any talent attached to the project.

HBO Max, Warner Brothers, and creator J.K. Rowling control rights to Harry Potter, but the franchise has complex rights issues that could be a factor.

Magical feeling of casting off the invisibility cloak

My name is Nyx Calder. I am a non-binary and transmasculine actor, writer and speaker, and I use they/them pronouns. I have been living openly as a trans person for a little under 12 years, and working as an actor for a little longer than that. Most recently, I’ve been cast in the role of Scorpius Malfoy for the Melbourne production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This role has had an immense impact on me, and I feel utterly thrilled to be portraying a lead role in such a major production while doing my best to provide what visibility I can for my own community.

Nyx Calder (left) as Scorpius Malfoy and Sean Rees-Wemyss as Albus Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Nyx Calder (left) as Scorpius Malfoy and Sean Rees-Wemyss as Albus Potter in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.Credit:Damian Bennett

While I was studying at NIDA in 2016, an instructor who I hold in high regard asked me, “why did you want to become an actor?” By this point in my life I’d rehearsed a response to this question, an easy deflection, something to make people laugh and move on: “I just really need the attention!” But unlike every other person who’d asked me the same thing, she definitely didn’t find my answer amusing. “How incredibly disappointing,” she sighed, “Someone like you, with your history? I don’t believe you. There has to be a better reason.”

She was right, of course, I already knew the real reason.

I felt drawn to acting because I’d never seen anyone like me while I was growing up, or at least not in the mainstream media. I never had the opportunity to read books, see films or experience theatre that represented me or my identity in any meaningful way.

Rupert Grint Is Not Enthusiastic About a ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series

“I never thought I would [join Instagram]. I always said that I wouldn’t, and then I just thought, ‘It’s been such a crazy [time]. So why not?’ It’s insane,” he said, adding, “I think Wednesday actually broke the internet, personally. She gets the credit.”

Meet Cameron Krutwig, Loyola Chicago’s mustachioed meme generator taking over March Madness

Are there any players left in the 2021 NCAA Tournament than Loyola Chicago’s Cameron Krutwig?

The 6-9, 255-pound senior center has totaled 29 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, five steals and 54.2 field goal percentage in the 8-seed Ramblers’ wins over 9-seed Georgia Tech and 1-seed Illinois.

He was particularly dominant in Loyola’s shocking upset over the Illini, putting up a team-high 19 points and game-high 12 rebounds and four steals in the 71-58 win. The fact that he not only played well, but thrived against the likes of Sports Grind Entertainment All-America selections Ayo Dusunmu (first team) and Kofi Cockburn (second team) made him an overnight Internet sensation.

MORE MARCH MADNESS: Live scores | Updated bracket | TV schedule

Oh, and the fact that he’s a free-spirited harmonica player with an eclectic music taste, is an endless meme generator and has a Twitter account dedicated to his mustache. But yeah, the basketball stuff plays a part too, which he can put on display in Saturday’s meeting with 12-seed Oregon State.

Here’s everything you need to know about the most fascinating player left in March Madness:

Cameron Krutwig mustache

Krutwig’s most notable feature is his mustache, which has enraptured fans the further Loyola delves into the tournament. According to a Feb. 11 feature by the student newspaper Loyola Phoenix, Krutwig began growing out his mustache — lovingly nicknamed “Krustache” by fans — over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I kind of started over quarantine just for fun,” Krutwig told the Phoenix. “I got back to school and everyone was kind of whatever about it. As the season has gone on and we’ve started to get some more recognition and things, obviously people are talking about it.”

The mustache hasn’t just engaged fans from afar, either. People close in Krutwig’s own life and team have also commented on the facial hair that’s taking March Madness by storm. Per the Phoenix, Krutwig’s girlfriend hates it. Loyola coach Porter Moser calls it a “mall cop ‘stache.” One fan who has followed the team “a couple years now” even made a dedicated Twitter account for all things Krustache-related.

As for when Krutwig will part with the mustache … don’t expect anything until after the NCAA Tournament is finished.

“I’ve gone to the team,” Krutwig said. “I’m like, ‘Hey, I’m probably going to shave this off, man,’ and like that has started World War III.”

Cameron Krutwig memes

Krutwig’s appearance and play have made him a viral sensation. A lot of people see him as a character in a Coen brothers movie, while others think he could fit in seamlessly into “Super Troopers.” Here are some of the best memes from Krutwig’s first two NCAA Tournament games:

How old is Cameron Krutwig?

Krutwig was born on Dec. 21, 1988, making him 22 years old.

Where is Cameron Krutwig from?

Krutwig hails from Algonquin, Ill., where he played for the Jacobs High School Golden Eagles. According to his team bio, he helped the team to a 93-29 record and three regional championships across four seasons, finishing as the school’s No. 4 all-time points leader (1,528) and top rebounder (1,281). He also totaled 245 career blocks and 240 assists.

He averaged 15.6 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game as a senior in 2016-17, not only helping the team to a 30-2 record and its first-ever sectional championship, but also earning a second consecutive selection to the Illinois all-state team. He ranked as a three-star recruit in the 2017 recruiting class per 247Sports’ Composite rankings; he was the 348th-best player in the class, the 32nd-best center and the 17th-best player in the state.

Per 247Sports, Krutwig received interest from Loyola Chicago, UAB, Vermont and DePaul; every program except the Blue Demons offered him, but he committed to the Ramblers in August 2016. The campus is an hour and 15 minutes southeast of his hometown.

HISTORY OF UPSETS BY SEED:
15 vs. 2 | 14 vs. 3 | 13 vs. 4 | 12 vs. 5

Will Cameron Krutwig get drafted?

Despite Krutwig’s high-level play this season and in the NCAA Tournament, he is not considered a draft prospect. He is not listed in the top 100 of ESPN’s NBA draft prospects, NBADraft.net, SI.com and more.

Cameron Krutwig harmonica

For those who think Krutwig is only a basketball talent, think again. He’s a modern-day Renaissance man, as evidenced by his, ahem, “mastery” of the harmonica. Just listen for yourself:

Marvelous.

Krutwig’s interest in music — according to a Feb. 11 CBS Sports report, it varies from the 1970s, ’80s and 90’s and includes such musical groups as the The Bee Gees, Hall Oates, Tears for Fears and Phil Collins — began two years ago when he pranked walk-on teammate Will Alcock. Per the report, Krutwig told Alcock he signed him up for a talent show, which took place later in the day. He sang Andre Bocelli’s “Por Ti Volaré” and won.

The two sometimes jam together, with Krutwig on the harmonica and Alcock, curiously enough, on the saxophone.

As for why he chose a harmonica?

“It brings people together,” Krutwig told CBS. “I think the harmonica is the single greatest instrument of all time. It’s so little, so versatile. It’s just funny.”

Loyola assistant Drew Valentine backed up Krutwig’s assertion that the harmonica brings people together; he told CBS Krutwig would pull it out and “shred” it with the similar intensity he plays basketball.

“I’ve heard the harmonica,” Valentine said. “On the bus, after a team meal. He’ll just pull it out and everyone will start dying laughing. It’s funny as hell, to be honest. He’s trying to do the most he can. Imagine someone trying to shred a guitar solo. The body contortion, moving around like that, imagine that. But with a harmonica.”
