Theatres ‘ready to fight’ after year ‘from hell’

About 25,000 audience members managed to see a show when its theatres, which host Six and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, were allowed to reopen last Christmas. But closing them again under fresh lockdown restrictions cost £250,000.

Allison Rowe | Books of my Life

Allison Rowe is the marketing coordinator for Visit Canton. You probably have read one of her blogs on VisitCanton.com. She enjoys shopping, going to Zumba at the Y, spending time with friends and family, going to concerts, exploring museums and watching football. Allison is a Stark County native and is excited to soon work, play and live in Canton, with her soon-to-be-husband, Andy Gromofsky, whom she met at Walsh University.

What is the last book you read?
“The Five Love Languages” by Gary Chapman (208 pages, 1992). My friend got me this book right after I got engaged, and it truly has been a wonderful affirmation that my fiancé and I are perfect partners for each other!

What is the last book that made you cry?
I’m usually not a huge Nicholas Sparks fan, but “The Choice,” (307 pages, 2007) made me ball my eyes out. I’ve had the book on my shelf for years, have seen the movie version, read it again and still made me cry.

What is next up on your reading list?
I have way too many books on my list, but I am super excited for the next three! A few of my girlfriends have a book exchange for Christmas and have a book club discussion with our books. “The History of Love” by Nicole Krauss (274 pages, 2005) is first on our list for the year. I have heard amazing things about Matthew McConaughey’s memoir “Greenlights” (315 pages, 2020). And who doesn’t love a little “Alright, Alright, Alright” in their lives? Lastly, I want to read “All The Way: My Life in Four Quarters” by Joe Namath (201 pages, 2019), to fill my void of football in my life.

What is the book you always come back to?
“Tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom (226 pages, 1997). I have read this book so many times. I think the first time I read this was when I was in middle school. And even if you just take it off the shelf and read a few pages at a time, it just really puts life into perspective.

What section of the library or bookstore do you visit first?
We are so lucky to have so many amazing libraries in Stark County! I’m a sucker for checking out the movie section to see what new releases they have in first. But when looking for books, I of course love historical fiction and sports autobiographies. Something about the dedication and determination that athletes have makes for a quick, inspirational read for me!

What book got you interested in your career?
Truly, the “American Girl” books really were the first experience that piqued my interest in history that would eventually lead to me to where I am today. When I was a child, I loved to read these books because they really painted the picture of what life was like during the time for the girl being featured in the book. Molly, who lived during World War II, and Felicity, who lived during the Revolutionary War, were my absolute favorite characters, and I wanted to learn more about the time period. From that point on, I knew I wanted to study and learn more about the time periods and drag my family around to experience it first-hand at museums. I now have the coolest job because I get to be involved with all of our arts, history and cultural attractions, and I love learning (and sharing) about all of the Canton history fun facts!

What is your go-to book recommendation?
“Dear George, Dear Mary: A Novel of George Washington’s First Love” by Mary Calvi (345 pages, 2019). Not only is George Washington one of my favorite presidents, but this very well written historical fiction about the romance between George and his first love, Mary, will spark the interest of not just those who are history buffs. The thing that impresses me the most about the book is that the author used tons of primary resources, including personal journals and hundreds of letters to write this book.

What is a classic you tell people you’ve read but really haven’t?
I know many people would not consider this a true classic, but the “Harry Potter” series. I’ve never read any of the books or seen any of the movies. It just has never been something that interested me, but I know so many people love the books, characters and movies.

Giovinazzi unveils bold new helmet design for 2021 season

Antonio Giovinazzi has a new helmet for 2021, incorporating some familiar motifs from his previous headgear in a stunning new design.

The 27-year-old Italian is gearing up for his third full season in Formula 1, partnering veteran Kimi Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo.

The squad recently unveiled their 2021 C41 and shook it down at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and now it’s Giovinazzi’s turn to reveal a new look. He is no stranger to eye-catching designs, having sported a beautiful paint job for the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.

This new design features the Italian Tricolore, as is standard for Giovinazzi’s headwear, plus the wasp on the back of the helmet that he has adopted as an emblem. It’s perhaps no surprise that the Italian has such a sense of style, given that he’s a bit of a fashionista…

Meanwhile, Red Bull pair Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have unveiled colourful new designs for this season too. Scroll down to see Giovinazzi’s.

Melbourne’s Harry Potter reopening will be a ‘beacon of hope’

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opened in London in July 2016, moved to Broadway two years later and came to Melbourne in January 2019, followed later that year by San Francisco. It was about to officially open in Hamburg two days before the pandemic hit last year and it shut down. “As producers, it’s been a heartbreaking time but also for all the actors and crew,” Callender says.

Actor Tom Wren, who plays Malfoy in Melbourne, says that as the world has changed, so has some of the play’s nuance.

“As we sat down at the table to read through the script again together for the first time, when we got to parts that deal with loneliness, isolation and parenting through a 2021 lens, it felt very fresh,” Wren says.

“There are parts in this that ring out in a completely new way. The lighting and blocking are all the same but our relationship to the content is different. I’ve done the show for over a year but I’ve never heard certain parts of the play illuminated as they are now. Different parts are singing out in new ways.”

‘Rabona’ and red card for Lamela as Arsenal beat Spurs, Leicester smash Sheffield United

Lucas Moura did well to take down Sergio Reguilon’s long pass and fed the ball to Lamela who, from the left edge of the penalty area, wrapped his left leg around his right standing leg to ping a low shot past the bamboozled Bernd Leno. It was the second time in his Spurs career that Lamela had scored a ‘rabona’, a trick that originates from his native Argentina.

Arsenal’s response was strong, however, and Cedric Soares hit the post with a piledriver. They got their reward when Tierney’s cut-back was met by Norwegian youngster Odegaard whose shot deflected off defender Toby Alderweireld before beating keeper Hugo Lloris.

Arsenal, who left skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the bench for “disciplinary reasons”, went ahead when Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez made a clumsy tackle in the penalty area on Lacazette who had just scuffed an attempted volley. Lacazette got up to beat Lloris from the spot.

“We played really bad in the first half. The 1-1 score was not a fair reflection of the first half. We were poor. Defending bad. No intensity or pressing. Some important players hiding,” Spurs manager Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports.

Harry Potter and the Curse of COVID

It turns out Gordon’s barrister Bret Walker SC and Atanaskovic’s representative Shane Doyle QC are very busy men. Atanaskovic Hartnell applied to shift the date of the appeal because its senior counsel, the Brisbane-based Doyle was no longer available. Turns out he had flown to Britain late last year and was unable to return to Oz in time. The corona, you see.

Additionally, Doyle expressed reluctance to fly back until he had received a COVID vaccination. So Atanaskovic Hartnell asked to change the date of the three-day hearing. But if only things were that easy. Gordon’s senior counsel Walker – who is representing Birketu – only has “very limited availability” to commit to three full days “at any later date this year”. Some of Walker’s recent professional engagements include his stint last year as the commissioner of the special inquiry into the Ruby Princess’ arrival in Sydney. And he successfully acted in Cardinal George Pell’s successful High Court appeal. Clearly the type of work that puts one in demand.

Why not pivot to Zoom? Doyle had ruled out representing his clients via videolink from Britain, explaining that with three sessions scheduled in the dead of the British night, he feared he couldn’t “safely” do justice to the appeal.

Justice Fabian Gleeson, who dismissed Atanaskovic Hartnell’s motion, clearly wasn’t too sympathetic.

″I accept that Mr Doyle genuinely holds such belief. That however is not a compelling reason to grant an adjournment.”

Gaming Journalists WON’T RETRACT False Statements About HOGWARTS LEGACY and Troy Leavitt?! | D-Rezzed – D

Troy Leavitt has officially quit Hogwarts Legacy and Avalanche, and has posted his reasons in a YouTube video. He clearly states that he left on his own and was still on good terms with his employers. He also corrected journos who got his title wrong. But will any of these people who low key called for his CANCELLATION have the guts to write any kind of correction or retraction? Probably not. They’ll just go back to throwing shade at the upcoming Harry Potter RPG because they want it GONE so J.K. Rowling doesn’t get paid!

‘What I remember most is the horror … the crushing sense of loss and inertia’

Exactly a year ago, when Australia’s theatres all abruptly went dark, Michael Cassel, executive producer of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Melbourne and the upcoming Hamilton at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre, started planning for his worst-case scenario.

“We thought, OK, let’s hope it’s a couple of weeks – but maybe it’s a month,” he says.

As a result of the pandemic, they had already cancelled their Lion King international tour scheduled to open in Wuhan, of all places. Now “there were zero dollars coming in to pay the cast and crew on production, zero dollars for our company [Michael Cassel Group] to keep everybody employed”.

“The financial implications were the greatest concern for us. The longer the shutdown continued, the more expensive it would be to relaunch the show. We never thought it would be 12 months.”

Those same thoughts were going through the mind of Sydney Theatre Company chief executive Patrick McIntyre when the company’s production of Dario Fo’s No Pay, No Way! closed abruptly on March 14.

“My first reaction was, ‘Oh my God. If we have to close this down for two weeks we’ll never make budget on that show’,” he says. “Then, within a week I’m like, ‘Oh, OK it’s going to be considerably worse than that’. We’ve been right to the bottom and come back to relative normality over, I suppose, 12 months. It’s incredible.”
