As we slowly work our way to the summer Blockbuster season, more and more movies are starting to land in theaters and on streaming services a fairly stead clip. The momentum looks to only get stronger from here as there are a ton of new movies coming out in April 2021. From titles like the bloody and brutal R-rated Mortal Kombat debuting in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, to the superhero comedy Thunder Force landing on Netflix, some of the year’s most anticipated movies are not far off.
But while the big releases like the aforementioned titles and others like Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse and Concrete Cowboy are getting a lot of attention, there are quite a few other, small movies that may have slipped between the cracks. And since we don’t want any film getting lost in the shuffle, we’ve put together this list of all the upcoming releases to help spread the word…
We previously went into great detail about all the things to know about Concrete Cowboy, but it never hurts having a quick refresher for an upcoming movie, especially one starring Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin. Ricky Staub’s coming-of-age drama follows the a young teenager named Cole (McLaughlin) who is sent to spend a summer with his estranged father Harp (Elba), the horse-riding figure in the city’s community of black cowboys. Inspired by the actual residents in the North Philly neighborhood in which the movie takes place, Concrete Cowboy debuts on Netflix April 2.
There have been numerous movies over the years that center on the Virgin Mary visiting someone, and in most cases the visitation brings forth a miracle of some sort. That doesn’t appear to be the case for The Unholy, the upcoming supernatural horror movie starring The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a struggling journalist who visits a small New England town to cover the story of a young hearing-impaired girl (Cricket Brown) who claims to have all kinds of powers after Mary came to her in a vision. Instead of bringing miracles, the phenomenon is the beginning of something much more evil. The Unholy opens in theaters April 2, which happens to be Good Friday….
The upcoming thriller Every Breath You Take follows a psychiatrist (Casey Affleck) whose life is thrown into turmoil when his client commits suicide. The situation quickly becomes even more complicated when the deceased client’s brother (Sam Claflin) appears at the doctor’s home unannounced and begins to cause a rift among the family, ultimately entering very uncomfortable and potentially dangerous territory. This dark version of What About Bob? (the films are not connected) lands in theaters and VOD April 2.
Emma Siligman’s comedy Shiva Baby takes what movies centering around funerals have done in the past and then turns it up a notch. This dark comedy follows Danielle (Rachel Sennott), a bisexual Jewish girl who runs into not only her ex-girlfriend at a Shiva with her parents but also her sugar daddy, who is attending the funeral with his wife and infant child. This tense, anxiety-inducing, and downright awkward film, which received a great deal of praise at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2020, debuts in theaters and on VOD April 2.
We previously took a deep dive into Thunder Force, the upcoming superhero Netflix comedy starring Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy, but here’s a quick rundown before the movie comes out in April. The film revolves around two estranged childhood friends Emily (Spencer) and Lydia (McCarthy), who gain some pretty amazing superpowers following a botched experiment and become their city’s first team of superheroes. Watch as the pair repair their friendship and save their community from a group of evil villains hellbent on destruction April 2 on Netflix.
They say no one can hear you scream in space, but what about going completely mad? Well, the crew of astronauts in Neil Burger’s sci-fi flick Voyagers will find out the hard way as embark upon a generations-long journey through outer space that will push them to their limits as they begin to lose touch with reality. Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Colin Farrell, and Isaac Hempstead Wright star in the mind-bending adventure when it opens in theaters April 9.
The upcoming animated musical film Arlo the Alligator Boy, follows the titular Arlo Beauregard (Michael J. Woodward) as he leaves the safety and security of his swamp to travel to New York City in hopes of finding his long lost father. The movie, which was directed by Ryan Crego, lands on Netflix April 16 with an animated series titled I Heart Arlo to follow at some point in 2021.
Monday, Argyris Papadimitropoulos’ romantic drama features Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough as two strangers who quickly become madly attracted to one another one hot summer night and begin a steamy love affair in Greek city of Athens. The movie is slated to open in theaters and on VOD April 16, just one week before we see how things end up for Stan’s Bucky Barnes on the season finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The long-awaited Anna Kendrick space drama Stowaway will finally see a release in April 2021 after what seems like months of speculation about the film’s debut. Set aboard a spacecraft headed to mars, the movie will follow the three-person crew as they discover a fourth, uncounted person has snuck onto the ship. With limited resources and an inability to just turn around and send the stowaway home, the crew is forced to make the most difficult of decisions. Find out how it ends when Stowaway takes off April 22 on Netflix.
After watching the Mortal Kombat trailer over and over again these past few weeks, it’s hard not to be excited for the bloody and bone-crunching video game adaptation fans have been waiting to see for years at this point. Just as in previous movies based on the controversial fighting game, Simon McQuoid’s upcoming adaptation will center on earth’s toughest fighters as they compete in a mythical tournament where they’ll square off against the forces of Outworld. Mortal Kombat opens in theaters and on HBO Max April 16.
Morgan Freeman will appear as a former cop who forces a drug courier (Ruby Rose) to carry out his dirty work in Vanquish, the upcoming thriller from George Gallo, the screenwriter behind films like Midnight Run, Bad Boys, and The Comeback Trail (which also features Freeman). In order to get his associate to do his bidding, Freeman’s retired officer holds the woman’s daughter hostage. This tense and action-packed crime flick lands on VOD services April 23.
William Brent Bell’s (The Devil Inside) upcoming horror film Separation tells the story of a young girl who finds solace in her artist father and dead mother, per Deadline. The movie, which features Rupert Friend, Violet McGraw, Mamie Gummer, Madeline Brewer, and Brian Cox, will also supposedly touch on the terrifying consequences of divorce. Find out what all this means when Separation opens in theaters April 23.
Breaking up is never easy, but big time social obligations can make things even more complication. And that’s the case for Lori (Aya Cash) and Doug (William Jackson Harper) the couple at the center of the upcoming romantic comedy We Broke Up. With Lori’s sister’s big day on the horizon, the on-the-rocks couple decide to not make a mess of things (at least to outside parties) and prolong their relationship for a few more days. Find out how this one pans out when We Broke Up opens in theaters and on VOD services April 23.
Have you ever wanted to watch a film like Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive but the ‘80s film about machines coming alive and killing humans is too much for the kids? Well, check out The Mitchells vs. The Machines the soon-to-be-released animated film about a family who embarks upon a road trip only to have their vacation upended by the world’s electronic devices who are staging an uprising. With voices provided by Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Olivia Colman, and more this one sounds like it’ll be a hit when it lands on Netflix April 30.
Amanda Seyfried and George Clare star as a New York City couple who move to a small town but begin to notice very strange things happening in their house and their marriage in Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s Things Heard and Seen. Natalia Dyer of Stranger Things fame and Better Call Saul’s Rhea Seehorn also appear in the horror film that lands on Netflix April 30.
Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, the upcoming military thriller starring Michael B. Jordan as John Clark, will follow the late author’s most famous character behind Jack Ryan on a mission to uncover an international conspiracy while also tracking down the men responsible for the murder of his pregnant wife. Written by Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples, and directed by Stefano Sollima, the first chapter in the John Clark saga debuts on Amazon April 30.
If that seems like a lot of movies coming out in April 2021, just wait until you see everything scheduled to premiere in the months following as there are are a ton of 2021 movie premiere dates coming up this summer.

Want to see Austin Butler rock out in a pink suit? How about one of the 89 other costumes the actor dons in the dazzling, jam-packed film that runs 2 hours and 40 minutes? Directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby), Elvis is a grand, exhilarating biopic that’s all about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. If you didn’t catch it in theaters, now’s your chance to find a spot in the crowd.

Steven Soderbergh directs this engaging tech thriller set during the COVID-19 pandemic. Angela, a Seattle tech worker played by a neon blue-haired Zoë Kravitz, has agoraphobia, a fear that prevents her from making it past the front door of her apartment. But when she uncovers an unsettling recording while doing her job, she’s pushed to make the leap. Kimi is a stylish thriller complete with eye-catching cinematography, a solid score and a protagonist you’ll be rooting for.

After a shooting occurs at her high school, 16-year-old Vada Cavell must navigate friendships, school and her relationship with her family. The Fallout skillfully approaches serious subject matter with realistic dialogue and compassion for its characters. With strong performances from stars Jenna Ortega, as Vada, and Maddie Ziegler, as her new friend Mia Reed, the feature will keep you glued to the screen for the entirety of its 90-minute runtime.

The Last Duel notably didn’t win a lot of eyeballs when it debuted in theaters in October. But it’s on HBO Max now, where audiences can watch from the comfort of their couch as Adam Driver and Matt Damon battle it out. Directed by Ridley Scott, The Last Duel is a historical drama set in the Middle Ages with an A-list cast that also includes Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck. If any of these details pique your interest, and you’re prepared to sit through its two and half hour runtime, pull out some popcorn and put on this flick.

What can we say about acclaimed Japanese drama Drive My Car? Well, it snagged an Oscar for best international feature film at the 2022 Academy Awards. It’s also a three-hour movie that people are sitting and watching all the way through, which, to me, speaks volumes. But seriously, Drive My Car is a powerful film that explores loss and letting go. If you missed it before the Oscars, stream it now.

King Richard is a feel-good biopic about the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. The film winds back the clock to before the sisters became household names, giving us a glimpse of their upbringing in Compton and time spent practicing on run-down courts with their father, Richard Williams (Will Smith). Convinced his daughters are going to be successful, Richard works tirelessly to get their star potential noticed by professional coaches. A complicated man with a tremendous personality, Richard is fascinating to get to know, and his unwavering belief in Venus and Serena is inspiring.

A rare (nowadays) 90-minute film, American Mexican drama Son of Monarchs will stay with you long after the end credits roll. This deep character study follows two brothers who are changed in markedly different ways by the trauma they suffered in childhood. This story, folding in magical realism, follows how they move forward in life — the butterfly metaphors are strong, with biologist Mendel returning to his hometown surrounded by majestic monarch butterfly forests.

Based on a magazine article by journalist Robert Kolker, this tale about a public school embezzlement scandal and the student journalists who broke the news is captivating from start to finish. Allison Janney and Hugh Jackman are great in their roles as the school officials who took part in the scheme. The drama also won the 2020 Emmy award for Outstanding Television Movie.

Set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Banshees is a darkly funny and heartbreaking drama that’s consistently stunning to look at. It’s about what happens after Colm (Brendan Gleeson) abruptly decides to cut off lifelong friend Pádraic. Farrell and Gleeson also starred together in director Martin McDonagh’s debut feature, In Bruges.
HBO Max’s Father of the Bride introduces a Cuban American family that includes patriarch Billy, a traditional guy who struggles to digest surprising news from his eldest daughter: She’s met a guy, and she wants to marry and move away with him. The third film adaptation of a 1949 novel of the same name by Edward Streeter, the movie is an enjoyable iteration that includes stars like Andy Garcia and singer Gloria Estefan.

Settle in for another eccentric, fantastic-looking feature from director Wes Anderson. The auteur behind Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel this time sets his sights on an alluring story — or rather, three. The French Dispatch, dubbed a “love letter to journalists,” takes viewers through a triad of separate tales, straight from the pages of a fictional magazine. If you missed this highly original installment when it hit theaters, now’s the time to get in on its captivating story.
Warner Bros.
A playful comedy set in the ’80s, 8-bit Christmas follows the story of a young Jake Doyle, a dedicated 10-year-old who desperately seeks a Nintendo. The film is delightfully narrated by Neil Patrick Harris, an older Jake reminiscing on his past quest to secure the gaming console. Yes, there’s a Christmas backdrop to the story, but Jake’s unyielding commitment to his mission, and what he learns along the way, make this cheery feature a must-watch even after the holiday season.

Meryl Streep playing an eccentric author in a Steven Soderbergh comedy. What more do you need to know? If you do want to know more: Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Alice Hughes (Streep) is struggling to finish her next book, chased by her literary agent (Gemma Chan). She boards a cruise ship with old friends, who inspired her best-known work. Tensions are strong. It looks great — Soderbergh uses crisp, natural light — and most of the dialogue is improvised. See how Dianne Wiest, Candice Bergen, Lucas Hedges and the rest of the impeccable cast have fun with that.
20th Century Studios
In Barbarian, a young woman (Georgina Campbell) travels to Detroit for a job interview and discovers her Airbnb has been double-booked. She doesn’t immediately trust the other person in the house (and, fair — the actor, Bill Skarsgård, appears as terrifying murder clown Pennywise in the It movies). But you definitely won’t predict what happens next. Barbarian can be found on lists of best horror movies of 2022.

A dinner at an exclusive restaurant turns from something to savor to something to survive in this shocking horror satire. This captivating documentary is filled with images that will stick with you. It centers on two brothers in New Delhi who run a bird hospital dedicated to black kites — birds of prey that are a staple of the sky. It was a contender for best documentary feature at the 2023 Oscars.

This film about beloved author, chef and globe-traveling TV host Anthony Bourdain comes from documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville, who also directed 2018’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and the Oscar-winning film Twenty Feet from Stardom. In interviews with people who knew Bourdain, like his friends, former partners and longtime colleagues, the doc tracks his career path, relationships and personal struggles. Bourdain fans and those less acquainted with the star will likely appreciate this two-hour look at his life.

Dreaming of a great movie night? Last Night in Soho, the latest movie from Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Shaun of the Dead) is here to provide. The film begins in the present day, where a style-loving Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) sets out for the London College of Fashion. Eventually, sleep transports her to the ’60s, where she encounters an aspiring singer named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy). Get ready for mystery, horror and dazzling neon lights.

A movie from Steven Soderbergh, the great director behind Erin Brockovich, Ocean’s Eleven and, more recently, Logan Lucky? Twists, thrills and desperate characters populate this crime thriller set in 1950s Detroit. When a seemingly simple job gets out of hand, a group of criminals must work together to uncover what’s really going on. Take in the incredible cast: Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm and Amy Seimetz. While the plot can be a little convoluted and some won’t be able to get past the fish-eye lens cinematography, Soderbergh’s sense of humor and immersive direction make this crime caper an entertaining night in.
Jonathan Olley/DC
Robert Pattinson steps out as Batman in this superhero flick directed by Matt Reeves. The movie takes place in a perpetually gray and rain-soaked Gotham City, where Bruce Wayne starts to seek out a murderer with an affinity for riddles. Along the way, he meets Catwoman, played by a swaggering Zoë Kravitz. Great scene-setting and storytelling make this a satisfying dark mystery.
Warner Bros.
Over-the-top violence abounds in this DC film about supervillains who agree to help the US government in exchange for some time off their prison sentences. Their mission is to destroy something alluded to as Project Starfish, harbored in the fictional island country of Corto Maltese. With a notable cast that includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba and John Cena, 2021’s The Suicide Squad is a wickedly entertaining, darkly funny bloodbath that differs from what you usually see in superhero movies. (Peacemaker, a spinoff TV series, is also available on HBO Max.)
Niko Tavernise/20th Century Studios
Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of the classic musical has triumphantly leapt and twirled its way onto HBO Max. The film scored seven Academy Award nominations and Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress for her role as Anita. Young Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) cross paths at a high school dance and begin a forbidden love affair, escalating tensions between two rival gangs. Eye-catching musical numbers and stunning production design transport viewers to 1950s New York. The film darkens in its second half, but with Spielberg at the helm, you’ll willingly absorb it all.

Sony dropped the second trailer for its upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Wednesday night, and it features a more detailed look at the “elite crew with all the best Spider-people.”
The nearly three-minute trailer begins with Miles Morales/Spider-Man’s encounter with the multiverse traversing The Spot. It also sees Gwen Stacy introducing Miles to a whole host of new Spider-people at a building that gives off a Citadel of Ricks vibe.
We also get a prolonged look at Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099, who challenges Miles’ sense of morality and ethics. And with the seemingly infinite number of Spider-people, the filmmakers couldn’t resist dropping in the Spider-Man pointing meme.

Welcome to the best new movies of 2023, where you can discover the latest films championed by the critics community! Every movie on the list is Certified Fresh, meaning they held on to a Tomatometer score of at least 75% after a minimum number of critics review — 40 for limited or streaming releases, 80 for wide theatrical releases, with five of those reviews coming from Top Critics.
The year started off strong with successive surprise genre hits in January, like M3GAN (from Blumhouse), Plane (starring Gerard Butler), Missing, and Infinity Pool (see the best horror movies of 2023). Notably, no wide release in February went Certified Fresh, plus we saw misfires from the normally reliable Steven Soderbergh (Magic Mike’s Last Dance) and Marvel Studios (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania).

The Wicked movie already sounds magical.
Universal’s film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical — which is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire — was first announced all the way back in 2016. Since then, we’ve slowly gotten more details about the production.
In November 2021, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were cast as the leads, Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.
In April 2022, director Jon M. Chu teased more details about the project, including that it would now be released in two parts.
Not wanting to cut down on too many musical numbers and important characters, Chu explained that the creative team decided to give themselves “a bigger canvas” by splitting the adaptation into two separate movies.
“With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told,” he continued.
As more details about the film are announced, read ahead for everything we know.
Erivo and Grande were the first actors attached to the project.
Following their casting announcements, Kristin Chenoweth, who originated the role of Glinda in Broadway’s Wicked, Grande and Erivo her seal of approval.
“I’m not sure if I’ve ever been this proud. From the very first day I met you … you were destined for this role. Congratulations @arianagrande!” Chenoweth wrote on Instagram. “The best Glinda you will be with @cynthiaerivo by your side 💗💚 I love you!! 🧚♀️👑🪄 @wickedmovie @wicked_musical #wicked.”
Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway, also showed love for Erivo and Grande, writing, “Congrats to two amazing women. May it change your lives for the better forever and ever as it has for us. So much love.”
In September 2022, Chu confirmed that Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey is joining the cast as Fiyero, the main love interest in the musical. “He’s perfect, they’re perfect,” the director wrote. “They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever….. I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!! #JonathanBailey #Wicked”
In October 2022, Variety reported that Jeff Goldblum was in final talks to play the Wizard, and in December 2022, they reported that Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh was in talks to play Madame Morrible.
The cast also includes SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical star Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik, per Variety.
Tony-award winner Stephen Daldry was originally supposed to direct, but he officially exited the production in October 2020.
Jon M. Chu — the mastermind behind Crazy Rich Asians and the film adaptation of Broadway’s In the Heights — was later tapped to helm the film in February 2021.
Additionally, a handful of people from the original Broadway musical will be returning for the film. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, who co-wrote the music and lyrics to the Broadway show, are adapting the screenplay, while Marc Platt will return as a producer.
On the 2022 SAG Awards red carpet, Erivo revealed that the movie adaptation of Wicked will be slightly different from the original.
“I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I think we’re going to enjoy the magic of it. We’re going to try and put our own spin on what we know already and show you a story about two women [who] are sisters.”
Schwartz previously shared that the movie will also include new music.
“I can tell you that at least as of now there will be probably four new songs in the movie,” he said back in 2016, according to Playbill. He also noted that three of those songs are newly written, while the other was cut from the Broadway production.
In July 2022, Schwartz shared a photo of himself, music director Stephen Oremus, and actors Troy Iwata, Marissa Rosen, and Wendi Bergamini from a recent demo recording session for the movie on his online fan newsletter The Schwartz Scene.
During Erivo’s conversation with ET, she revealed that she and Grande would go into rehearsals for the film in July 2022. In October 2022, Grande insinuated that filming would be kicking off soon as she debuted her blonde hair for the role. In December 2022, Chu confirmed that filming had begun.
The film was originally slated to be released on Dec. 22, 2021, but due to COVID-19-related production delays, the release was pushed back. In Chu’s statement from April 2022, he teased that the Wicked films would be released “on successive Christmas holidays beginning December 2024.”
However, in March 2023, Grande revealed that the film’s release was moved up a month as she shared a black and green image that read: “Wicked. November 27, 2024.”
