That might have made sense following the pandemic, but some industry figures are now starting to push back. Reverting to the traditional theatrical window makes more sense for many, particularly in a summer where films such as Top Gun: Maverick have been taking huge amounts of money at the box office, while enjoying the cultural relevance a cinema release brings with it.
Hyderabad: Ace filmmaker SS Rajamouli’s father V. Vijayendra Prasad, who has written Blockbusters like Baahubali: The Beginning, Baahubali: The Conclusion, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and RRR, revealed that he is going to pen down the story for a film and web series on the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS).
On Tuesday, V. Vijayendra Prasad was invited as a chief guest at the launch of the book ‘The Hindutva Paradigm’ written by RSS National Federation member Ram Madhav. The launch took place at KVSR Siddhartha Pharmaceutical Science College, Vijayawada.
According to a report in Sakshi, Vijayendra Prasad spoke on the occasion and said that he had a different opinion on the RSS until a few years ago. But when he was approached to write a story for its film, he traveled to Nagpur and learned the truth about the party.
The Quint’s report from 2018 says, “The film will explore the origins and achievements of the RSS since its inception and will predictably glorify its founders and senior leaders such as Dr. KB Hedgewar, MS Golwalkar, Veer Savarkar, K Sudharshan, Mohan Bhagwat and so on.”
Reportedly, the RSS film is going to be made on a large-scale budget with no less than Rs. 100 crores to be spent on its making and it is going to be funded by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Several Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi actors, including Akshay Kumar, have been approached for the cast, however, SS Rajamouli will not be a part of this project.
There are plenty of new movies and shows to watch this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney Plus and more streaming services.
On the movie side, Jamie Foxx is a vampire hunter in Day Shift, while Owen Wilson headlines the family-friendly superhero adventure Secret Headquarters.
This weekend’s shows are led by the series reimagining of A League of Their Own, the classic underdog sports movie. A fresh crop of Rockford Peaches is led by Abbi Jacobson, while Chanté Adams takes the spotlight to represent a Black perspective missing from the film.
Other new series include the Hurricane Katrina disaster drama Five Days at Memorial, the animated Marvel shorts of I Am Groot and the zombie spinoff Tales of the Walking Dead. The big returning TV show is Never Have I Ever season 3, the teen comedy from Mindy Kaling.
Here’s our guide on what to watch this weekend. And when you’re done here, check out the best movies of the year so far and where to stream them (opens in new tab), and why the DC Universe is looking more and more like a disaster (opens in new tab).
Reboots of classic films are almost always a very bad idea, but the new series version of A League of Their Own may prove to be an exception. Like the movie, it’s set in the 1940s, when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was founded while many male players fought in World War II. The new take combines the original’s baseball action and rousing feminism with deeper explorations of race and sexuality.
That’s evident in the presence of a Black lead, Chanté Adams as Max, alongside Abbi Jacobson’s Carson. Additionally, a sexual awakening looks to be in store, as Carson is drawn to teammate Greta (D’Arcy Carden). They’re part of a completely different cast of characters, though Nick Offerman’s gruff manager Dove Porter seems analogous to Tom Hanks’ Jimmy Dugan. All he needs to do is yell, “There’s no crying in baseball!”

OMG, Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) has a boyfriend! And not just any boyfriend — the handsome, popular Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet). They are together, like publicly, and she can’t believe her luck. But neither can her high school classmates, whose skepticism causes Devi to spiral. A lack of confidence isn’t exactly attractive and may end up pushing Paxton away.
Then there’s academic rival Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison), who still seems to be crushing on her after their five-minute-long almost relationship. Their easy banter and common interests stand in stark contrast to her relationship with Paxton. Things get even more complicated by the introduction of an Indian teen boy (Anirudh Pisharody) who turns out to be smoking hot. This potential love quadrangle might be too advanced of a problem for Devi to solve.

John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and Carlton Cuse (Lost) team up to adapt the nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink, which chronicles the impact of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on a New Orleans hospital.
The story is framed by an investigation of how 45 patients ended up dying in the hospital during the natural disaster, one of the worst in American history. Deploying flashbacks, the limited series portrays the utter chaos brought on by lack of electricity, food, water and near-silence from authorities and higher levels of the organization. The doctors and staff (played by a terrific cast including Vera Farmiga, Cornelius Smith Jr, Adepero Oduye and Cherry Jones) do everything they possibly can in the face of the overwhelming catastrophe — but as we all know, tragically, it won’t be enough.

I Am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot. I am GROOT. I … am … Groot. OK, sorry, now that’s out of my system: Disney Plus has released this 20-minute long Marvel snack consisting of five animated shorts depicting young Groot’s life. It’s set between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and one of the post-credits scenes in that movie.
Like its bigger, elder siblings, the series combines offbeat humor, a charming irreverence and a touch of darkness, while also being totally adorable. The episodes follow Groot from his literal first steps out of his plant pot through his toddler days to adolescence. Vin Diesel reprises his voice role, while Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon makes a cameo. While it’s on the shorter side, the streaming service is hoping I Am Groot’s quality makes people forget about that incoming Disney Plus price hike.

Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg as vampire hunters? Sounds like a premise cooked up on a hazy, lazy evening. It’s actually the culmination of decades of toiling in Hollywood by J.J. Perry, a longtime stunt performer and fight coordinator on the John Wick movies.
Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, who works hard to provide for his family as a blue-collar pool cleaner by day. By night, he’s a freelance vampire killer who’s trying to get back into the cushy international union. Bud was expelled for breaking various rules, but his pal Big John is trying to get him back into the group for the pay and benefits. He’ll have to be on his best behavior while trying to score enough cash to prevent his wife and daughter from moving away.

After an initial foray into the superhero genre with Loki, Owen Wilson goes for a second helping outside of the MCU in this family-friendly film. On a camping trip with his wife and son, Wilson’s character witnesses an alien ship crash. It contains a mysterious glowing orb that pronounces Jack to be “the Guardian,” forever altering his life and relationships.
Walker Scobell of The Adam Project once again takes on the role of a resentful son. Years after the crash, Charlie unhappily weathers the many absences and excuses of his workaholic father. He doesn’t realize that his hero known as The Guard is his own dad! That is, until Jack is called away by an “IT emergency” and Charlie invites his friends over. They stumble upon The Guard’s lair and play with his tech too much, putting them in the crosshairs of agents determined to steal the powerful orb.

The Broadway musical 13 was the first production to feature a cast and band made up entirely of teens — one of whom was then-unknown Ariana Grande. Before her superstar music career, before even her stint on Nickelodeon, Grande got her break in 13. Now a new generation of teen performers is tackling the musical.
The tale follows 12-year-old Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) as he moves from New York City to small town Indiana in the wake of his parents’ divorce. He strikes up a friendship with classmate and neighbor Patrice, who develops a crush on him. Evan is determined to have the best bar mitzvah ever, which hinges on the attendance of popular kid Brett and his crew — even if it means hurting Patrice in the process. He soon discovers that growing up can be very complicated.

The Walking Dead Universe gets yet another spinoff in this six-episode anthology series focused on new and established characters grappling with the zombie apocalypse. The OG show is coming to an end soon, after experiencing a precipitous drop in ratings and cultural relevance, but AMC is never going to let this valuable property die. In addition to Tales, there are forthcoming spinoffs based on Rick and Michonne, Maggie and Negan, and Daryl (sans Carol).
Tales features a cast including Olivia Munn, Samantha Morton, Terry Crews, Parker Posey, Anthony Edwards and Poppy Liu. In one episode, Morton reprises her role as Alpha in what appears to be an origin story. Other installments play with tone, storytelling styles and timelines, making this possibly the edgiest TWD project yet.

The end has come for the fantasy series based on the comic books by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez. The third and final season wraps up the tale of the Locke family, whose sprawling ancestral home contains magical keys along with a portal to a demonic realm.
The final chapter finds the Lockes at relative peace. Older brother Tyler (Connor Jessup) has erased all memories of magic, while mom Nina (Darby Stanchfield) has restored hers. But the entire family will have to come together to fight a new villain, Frederick Gideon (Kevin Durand), a colonial soldier possessed by a malevolent force. His plan is to use the keys to break the barrier between the human and demon realm once and for all.

“Welcome… we’ve been expecting you.” Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer for a film adaptation of a book series titled The School for Good Evil, being directed by filmmaker Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor). The epic fantasy adventure is about a group of boys and girls that are taken to an institution where they are trained to become fairy tale-like heroes and villains. Based on the epic international best-selling series by Soman Chainani. The film stars Kerry Washington, Charlize Theron, Sophia Anne Caruso, Sofia Wylie, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Flatters, Kit Young, Peter Serafinowicz, Rob Delaney, Mark Heap, Patti LuPone, and Rachel Bloom. The School for Good Evil follows best friends Sophie and Agatha, who find themselves on opposing sides of a modern fairy tale when they’re swept away into an enchanted school where young heroes and villains are trained to protect the balance of good and evil. Oh yeah this definitely sounds cheesy and the footage doesn’t look that exciting so far. It seems a bit like Maleficent mashed up with Harry Potter, for better or worse.
Here’s the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Paul Feig’s The School for Good Evil, from YouTube:
In the village of Gavaldon, two misfits and best friends, Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie), share the unlikeliest of bonds. Sophie, a lover of fairy tales, dreams of escaping her ordinary village life, while Agatha, with her grim aesthetic, has the makings of a real witch. Then one night under a blood red moon, a powerful force sweeps them away to the School for Good Evil — where the true story of every great fairy tale begins. Yet something is amiss from the start: Sophie is dropped into the School for Evil, run by the glamorous and acid-tongued Lady Lesso (Charlize Theron), and Agatha in the School for Good, that’s overseen by the sunny and kind Professor Dovey (Kerry Washington). According to the Schoolmaster (Laurence Fishburne), only true love’s kiss can change the rules and send the girls to their rightful school. But when a dark and dangerous figure (Kit Young) with some mysterious ties to Sophie reemerges and threatens to destroy the school and the rulebook entirely — the only way to a happy ending is to survive the fairytale first. The School for Good Evil is directed by filmmaker Paul Feig, of the films I Am David, Unaccompanied Minors, Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor, and Last Christmas previously. The screenplay is by Vanessa Taylor, David Magee, Paul Feig, adapted from Soman Chainani’s book series. Netflix will debut the film streaming starting September later this year. Who’s in?

Two Spielberg classics are coming back to IMAX theaters later this summer. Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment today announced that, for the first time, U.S. audiences will be able to experience two classic, culture-defining Steven Spielberg films—E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Jaws (1975)—on IMAX screens nationwide (only in the US for now). Both of these Steven Spielberg movies have been re-released and upgraded many times, so this isn’t anything new, however it is exciting to have the chance to watch them again on the big, BIG screen. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial will be released exclusively on IMAX screens beginning August 12th, to celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary. Jaws will be released on IMAX screens and also in RealD 3D (ugh, really?) beginning September 2nd at the end of the summer. There’s also a brand new trailer they’re debuting for E.T.’s 40th in front of Jurassic World Dominion, arriving online later.
“Universal is honored to have been a part of so many extraordinary, unforgettable Steven Spielberg films over the past 47 years, including Jaws in 1975, E.T. in 1982 and Jurassic Park in 1993,” said Jim Orr, president of domestic theatrical distribution for Universal Pictures. “No filmmaker, it’s fair to say, has had a greater or more enduring impact on American cinema or has created more indelible cinematic memories for tens of billions of people worldwide. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of E.T. and the first Universal-Spielberg summer Blockbuster, Jaws, than to allow audiences to experience these films in a way they’ve never been able to before.”
During its original release in June of 1982, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ended up the highest-grossing film of the year, and went on to win four Academy Awards out of its nine nominations in total. During its original release in June of 1975, Jaws, based on the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, became the first true summer Blockbuster and a cultural tsunami. It shattered every record to become the highest-grossing film of the year, earning a nomination for Best Picture and winning three Academy Awards, including one for John Williams’ iconic musical score. The rest is history. “Steven Spielberg redefined modern cinema and ushered in a new era of bold, swing-for-the-fences filmmaking, and the IMAX Experience has expanded around the world because of the trail blazed by films like E.T. and Jaws.” Neither of these movies were made for IMAX and they’ll be up-converted, but that’s okay, they can still be enjoyed on the gigantic IMAX screens anyway.
Check your local listings for details and tickets to see either E.T. or Jaws. To find the nearest IMAX screen, head to IMAX.com and search. As always when they re-release a movie in theaters – this is the perfect time to bring a friend or family member who hasn’t seen either of these yet, to show them how amazing they are.

“If you care about him, you’ll let him go, instead of blaming me for taking him.” Quiver Distribution has unveiled the official trailer for an indie dramedy called Small Town Wisconsin, made by a Milwaukee local filmmaker named Niels Mueller. The film premiered back in 2020 at a few small film fests, and will be out on VOD to watch in June this summer. A father tries hard to be a good dad but alcoholism is his biggest deterrent. After losing a custody battle, perpetual teenager Wayne Stobierski steals his son away for one last father-son weekend to the city of their dreams – Milwaukee, Wisconsin (let’s go!). What’s supposed to be a light-hearted adventure, transforms into a journey of profound redemption. David Sullivan stars, joined by Bill Heck, Kristen Johnston, Tanya Fischer, Cooper J. Friedman, and Braden Andersen. This reminds me a lot of C’mon C’mon, similar vibes, but with a story that’s connected specifically to Wisconsin.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Niels Mueller’s Small Town Wisconsin, direct from YouTube:

“We made a deal. You broke it.” Samuel Goldwyn has revealed the official US trailer for a Finnish action thriller titled Attack on Finland, which is the international release title. It also goes under Omerta 6/12 or 6/12, which is a reference to December 6 the Finnish Independence Day. A celebration during the holiday in Finland takes a tragic turn when the Presidential Palace is attacked and the president is taken hostage. Soon it is clear that the main target behind the attack is a plan to destabilize the security of Europe. That sounds a lot like Finland’s version of Olympus Has Fallen or White House Down. The action film’s cast includes Jasper Pääkkönen, Nanna Blondell, Sverrir Gudnason, Cathy Belton, Nika Savolainen, Pertti Sveholm, Juhan Ulfsak, Zijad Gracic, Miodrag Stojanović, and Dragomir Mrsic. This looks hyper-stylized and intense, but it also feels a bit made-for-TV in quality. Still may be an entertaining watch.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Aku Louhimies’ Attack on Finland, direct from YouTube:
Finland’s Independence Day celebration on December 6th is interrupted by an attack on the Presidential Palace. A set of distinguished guests are taken as hostages. Security service officer Max Tanner (Jasper Pääkkönen) is set as the negotiator of the hostage crisis and soon it is clear that the main target behind the terrorist attack is a plan to destabilize the security of Europe. Tanner must make bold and even painful decisions to figure out who is behind the attack. After all, there are not only human lives to protect, but the future of Europe as a whole. Attack on Finland, aka Omerta 6/12, is directed by prolific Finnish filmmaker Aku Louhimies, director of many movies including Restless, Lovers Leavers, Frozen Land, Frozen City, Man Exposed, 60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero, Naked Harbour, 8-Ball, and The Wait. The screenplay is written by Jari Olavi Rantala; based on the script by Antti J. Jokinen, Mika Karttunen. Produced by Antti J. Jokinen, Evelin Penttilä, Sirkka Rautiainen, Mikko Tenhunen. It first opened in Finland last fall. Goldwyn Films will release Attack on Finland in select US theaters + on VOD starting July 1st, 2022 this summer.
